"Shaun the Sheep" top dog in Scarecrows competition

The REID family were judged worthy winners of this year's Carnival of Scarecrows competition, held in conjunction with the annual Bundanoon Garden Ramble.

Announcing the winner, competition coordinator, Peter WEARING SMITH, said that all three judges had commented on the high standard of entries in this year's competition, yet the three judges were unanimous in their decision. "The imaginative and creative concept, allied with excellent execution and an overall sense of fun cemented the result," said Peter, who thanked his fellow Lions judge, Bernd RAETZE, and independent judge, Jackie TURNER, for their efforts. On behalf of the Club, he also thanked the Illawarra Fly for generously donating the prize, a family pass to the famous attraction.

Wendy "right on" in Raffle stakes

Bundanoon resident Wendy WRIGHT was the lucky winner of the Garden Ramble raffle conducted by Bundanoon Lions. Our hostess for this year's Lions Cafe, Laurel Hone, drew the raffle, with a tub of gardening necessities valued at over $250 as the prize.

flashID Adopted by N2

At the annual Lions District 201 N2 convention, held in Nowra on 09 and 10 October, your club's flashID Community Service Project was adopted without a dissenting voice or vote, thanks in no small part to the eloquence and disciplined delivery of our president Les, ably backed up by PCC Franz MAIRINGER OAM, of Kangaroo Valley Lions.

This means that we are now able to promote flashID to all Clubs, which means, in turn, that when other Lions learn you are from Bundanoon, they will probably ask you about flashID.

So that all Bundanoon members can be fully familiar with all aspects of both the project and the product, our training CDs will be available to members. But please, if you take on, don't just leave it on the shelf. Look, learn, nad if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Club wins MD Convention Award

Following our participation in the recent Mildura MD201 Convention, presenting the Club's flashID Project, we were both pleased and surprised to receive in the post an award for the Best Commercial Display at the convention. Click on picture below for full size image.

RSA Course

Once again Bundanoon Lions will be manning the Beer Tent at the upcoming Highland Fling cycle festivities in November. But before we can do it everybody manning the tent must possess a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate.

Arrangements are being made with the Bundanoon Club for a one-day course to be run for us in conjunction with the Club. Participation fees will be paid by Lions, but we must have an idea of numbers.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Les on or before the July 11 Changeover Day.

First Aid Course

We are also considering running a First Aid course. If you are interested in gaining a First Aid qualification, or updating an old one, please advise Les by July 11

Further Changes to Meeting arrangements

Due to the popularity of Idle a Wile for dinner meetings, and the numbers of very welcome guests attending, your board has decided that such meetings should be largely social events.

Therefore, the board meetings previously held at 7.00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month will now be moved forward to 6.00 pm, and followed by a Club Business Meeting at 7.00.

These meetings will be at our new venue, the Supper Room at the Soldiers' Memorial Hall.

Thus, the next business meeting will be at 7.00 pm sharp on Tuesday October 12.

Important news re subscriptions

Good news for all members who have a spouse or partner interested in joining is that there is now a special Family subscription rate of $120 per annum. That is $80 for the primary member and $40 for the partner, payable half-yearly as before.

So get those partners in to help share the load officially, rather than unofficially.

And a reminder: Half yearly dues are now payable.

First Aid Course

We are still considering running a First Aid course. If you are interested in gaining a First Aid qualification, or updating an old one, please advise Les.

Club wins International awards

At the March 23 dinner meeting, PDG Ralph CLARK presented Lions International awards to the club, and also to president Elizabeth CRANNY and Secretary/Treasurer Les JOHNSON.

President Elizabeth was specifically recognised with the President's Diamond Pin award for her leadership, while Les received his Golden Key award - the highest available - for his consistent contributions to membership recruitment.

Quite a joke as president Elizabeth is "pinned" by PDG Ralph

In making the presentations, Ralph commended the continuity and achievements of both Elizabeth and her late husband, Clyde, who preceded her as club president, as well as paying tribute to the continuing and unstinting support given by secretary/treasurer Les.

Club ratifies cycle track deferral

At the same meeting club members unanimously ratified the Board's previous decision to defer consideration of the proposed bike path project (see "Club considers..." story below) until the promised detailed costings have been received from the scheme's promoters.

Club assists local swimmer

A cash donation from Bundanoon Lions Club is helping local swimming champion, Daniel RUMSEY, compete in the 5th Down Syndrome Swimming World Championships, to be held in Taipei from October 1 to October 8, 2010.

Daniel was born with down syndrome but he refuses to consider himself disabled.

In fact, proud parents, John and Sue Rumsey are convinced their 19-year-old son is capable of achieving anything he sets his mind to.

At the last world championships, in Portugal in 2008, Daniel carried the Australian flag as team captain and was the top swimmer of the meet.

Club considers bike path collaboration but refutes premature report

Contrary to a report attributed to local cycling promoter, Huw KINGSTON, in the recent issue of Jordans Crossing Gazette, the Club is in the early stages of considering a project to build a bicycle track at the Bundanoon Oval.

At the annual general meeting of the Bundanoon Community Association, held on March 18, secretary Les JOHNSON issued the following statement on behalf of the Club:

"The Lions Club of Bundanoon would like to correct an article in the Jordan's Crossing Gazette re: a bicycle track project. The article states that the Club and an organisation called Highland Trails are considering building a bicycle track.

"The Board agreed to consider the project and if we thought it was a good project for our community we would put it to a full meeting of our club for recommendation to investigate and set up a steering committee to liaise with all authorities and local residents before deciding to seek government assistance and grants, etc.

"We wish it to be known that the first approach [by Kingston] was on March 9, 2010 and at no stage had we had any discussions with Highland Trails and therefore the article was not a true statement of the facts.

"We assure the members of BCA and residents of Bundanoon that any involvement by Lions Club of Bundanoon will only be considered with full community support."

President - Elizabeth Cranny.
Secretary/Treasurer - Les Johnson.
